11 things you need to know in tech today

Here’s your daily tech digest, by way of the DGiT Daily newsletter, for Tuesday, May 7, 2019!

1. Google I/O 2019 starts in hours

Google IO 2019

Google I/O starts today at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA, and the big headline events start with the keynote at 10AM PDT, streamed on YouTube.

What we expect today:

  • The Pixel 3a and 3a XL. This is the biggest consumer-facing announcement we think we know about. Mid-range Pixel devices, with the same great camera, reportedly starting at $399 and $479. Finally, Google goes aggressive on pricing.
  • More: Pixel 3a and 3a XL – everything we know so far.
  • We know we’ll see the Nest Hub Max, a 10-inch smart display with a camera, because, well, Google leaked it already, now we’ll find out pricing and release date.
  • More Android Q: As is tradition, Google talks about its next version of Android, and while we’ve seen early previews, the big features not yet revealed are usually announced on stage.
  • Google Stadia saw a big announcement we covered in-depth a few months ago, but we still have so many questions about price, included games, and more.
  • Other guesses: It wouldn’t be Google if we didn’t see more from its AI.
  • Expect Google Assistant announcements: new features and tricks.
  • Google Duplex should go further too, Google Lens and Google Photos will probably receive new features, Chrome OS, Android TV as well, and perhaps we’ll see another jaw-dropping demonstration like we saw from Google Duplex last year?

What we hope for:

  • I have just two big hopes: that the Pixel 3a is affordable greatness and that I can recommend it to anyone who doesn’t need a flagship but still wants a great camera and general experience.
  • I also hope we will soon be able to address our own Google Assistant without having to say “Google” as part of the wake/hot-word.
  • And, dare I suggest, more in the way of privacy?
  • More: Google I/O keynote times and details here.
