Could a future Huawei flagship have an under-display camera?

  • Two Huawei patents show the same edge-less phone with different camera systems.
  • The patents suggest there might be an under-screen camera on the phone.
  • The patented device also doesn’t have any volume buttons.

A new Huawei smartphone with extremely rounded edges and possibly an under-screen camera has been spotted in patents. Discovered by LetsGoDigital, two Huawei patents show a phone with the same design, albeit with different rear camera setups, indicating that they could be two different models of the same device.

What’s interesting is that the phone is completely bezel-less, with edges that curve all the way to the back of the phone. It looks like Huawei’s “Overflow Display” on steroids. Noticeably, there is no punch hole on the screen or any prominent cut-out for a pop-up camera module, suggesting that Huawei could adopt an under-screen selfie camera on this one.

Another curious observation of this mysterious Huawei phone is that it has no volume buttons. LetsGoDigital notes that there’s only a power button up top and the volume slider could be displayed virtually via a sidebar (akin to the Mate 30 series).

Elsewhere, both the newly granted patents show a USB-C port at the bottom of the phone. Both of them also show the same edge-less display and top-placed power button. However, one of them shows a phone with a vertically aligned triple system (see image below), while the other shows a rounded quad-camera system similar to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro (see image above).

Given that the phone has appeared in two different patent filings, Huawei may be looking to implement this all-screen design in future phones like the P-series or Mate family. But we must remember that patents don’t always result in actual products and companies experiment with all kinds of designs all the time. So this might not end up being an actual Huawei phone.

Still, the patented device does look cool with its expansive screen real estate. Under-screen cameras are also something we’ve been looking forward to. However, not everyone likes waterfall displays, so maybe Huawei should think twice before implementing it to such an extent on an actual phone.
