Galaxy Fold 2 tipped to ditch under-screen camera for more familiar solution
We’ve been hearing murmurs about the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 for months now, with everything from the code-name to screen sizes apparently leaking.
Earlier this year, we also heard that Samsung was considering an under-screen selfie camera on the inside screen. Now, industry expert Ross Young has claimed that the manufacturer has abandoned plans for this radical tech.
“No notch, hole punch on inside,” the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants tweeted in response to a tweet by XDA‘s Max Weinbach. The XDA representative’s earlier tweet suggested that Samsung would offer a small notch on the Galaxy Fold 2’s main screen.

Either way, all signs are pointing to Samsung ditching the under-screen selfie camera on its upcoming foldable. This suggests that they had trouble getting it to work with the form factor. But the more likely reason is that, like other manufacturers, Samsung simply wasn’t happy with the picture quality.
Redmi general manager Lu Weibing outlined challenges with under-screen selfie cameras earlier this year. The Xiaomi executive said that high PPI screens reduce the amount of light that can get to the under-screen camera, likely resulting in darker, poorer quality images. Furthermore, Weibing said that simply reducing the display resolution wasn’t the answer either, as this introduced problems like color patches on the screen.
Nevertheless, these latest leaks suggest that the Galaxy Fold 2 will definitely be an improvement over the original Fold’s gigantic cutout on the main screen (seen in the main image). Hopefully Samsung gives us a proper outside screen too.
