A 192MP phone could be revealed as soon as next month
The megapixel wars have returned in the last few years, as smartphone manufacturers deliver 48MP, 64MP, and even 108MP cameras on their devices. But it looks like brands aren’t content with these resolutions.
Frequent leaker Digital Chat Station reports on Weibo that a 192MP smartphone is coming, hinting at more information arriving as soon as next month.
The tipster also notes that the device will be equipped with an SM7250 (Snapdragon 765 series) processor, which means it doesn’t have a flagship chipset. So hopefully this translates into a cheaper price tag.
For what it’s worth, the Snapdragon 765 processors do indeed support 192MP cameras. But the chips only support snapshots, which means HDR and general multi-frame processing is out of the question at this resolution.
So who could be behind this 192MP phone, then? Well, a new report this week notes that LG plans to reveal a Snapdragon 700-series 5G phone next month. But we’ve also seen Xiaomi blaze a trail by launching the first 64MP and 108MP phones last year in conjunction with Samsung. Either way, it’s set to be a big leap over 108MP phones in terms of sheer resolution.
This wouldn’t be the first time we heard of higher resolution cameras on smartphones either. Qualcomm previously confirmed that its Snapdragon 865 processor supports 200MP cameras, and told Android Authority that it was working with partners on a 200MP sensor.
