Google Pixel 4 update: Auto call-screen, improved Duo calls, more coming soon
Update: December 9, 2019 at 10:33 a.m. ET: Google is bringing new features to the Pixel 4 and 4 XL in an update, and it’s not part of a regular security patch. Pixel devices already get regular bug fixes and general improvements, but these new “feature drops,” as Google calls them, will bring more content and tools to your device. The first one will land soon, and along with general performance enhancements, it comes with new photo editing tools, enhanced Call Screening, and improved Duo calls.
The new photo editing tweak gives users more control over both new and old photos. Users can turn any photo into a portrait photo by blurring the background long after the picture is taken. Adding a blurred background to any photo is one click away, even if the photo was taken years ago on a different device.
Google’s Call Screening feature launched on the Pixel 3 line of devices. Now, on the Pixel 4, this feature will automatically screen unknown callers, and it will decline robocalls before your device even rings. When it’s not a robocall, your Pixel 4 will share helpful context about who is calling and why.
Google’s video chat app, Duo, also gets a useful Pixel 4-exclusive update. Thanks to the Pixel 4’s wide-angle selfie camera, Duo will auto-frame your face in the video call, even as you move about. Duo will also automatically adjust the camera to fit other people as they join the chat with you.
General video playback on Duo should be smoother, too, even with weak internet connections. Google has implemented machine learning into the app on Pixel 4 devices to mitigate spotty connections. This enables the app to predict upcoming sounds, so finicky audio connections don’t disrupt conversations. Duo now also works with the Pixel 4’s 90Hz display for an even smoother overall experience.
This Google Pixel 4 feature drop will land soon. Keep your eye out and your phone up to date until then so you can get it as soon as possible.
Also, in an upcoming update, Google Pixel 4 users in the UK, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, and Australia will get an update to the new Google Assistant. Unfortunately the new Assistant is still only available in English, and it won’t work if you have a G Suite account on your phone.
