Best phones with in-display fingerprint scanners (August 2019)

OnePlus 7 Pro optical fingerprint reader

Phones with in-display fingerprint sensors first appeared in the beginning of 2018, and the technology was rather unpolished at the time. We’ve seen some notable strides since then though, as in-display sensors become faster and more accurate. There are loads of phones with the technology nowadays, so we thought it would be a good idea to choose the best phones with in-display fingerprint scanners.

Best phones with in-display fingerprint scanners:

Editor’s note: We will be updating this list as more phones with in-display fingerprint sensors hit the market.

1. Huawei P30 Pro

The Huawei P30 Pro is one of the best phones of 2019, owing to its fast performance, great battery life, and impressively fast charging. The phone also packs an in-display fingerprint sensor, embedded in a 6.47-inch OLED screen (1080p).

Editor's Pick

But arguably the main reason to get the P30 Pro is its quad-camera setup, featuring a 40MP f/1.6 main camera, an ultra-wide 20MP f/2.2 shooter, an 8MP periscope zoom lens, and a ToF camera. The 40MP camera is an RYYB sensor too, as opposed to a traditional RGB sensor, and this allows it to deliver unparalleled low-light image quality. Huawei’s periscope zoom lens also delivers 5x zoom, 10x hybrid zoom, and up to 50x digital zoom.

The phone wasn’t officially released in the U.S. though, with the trade ban complicating matters even more. But it should be pretty easy to get if you’re in the likes of Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Huawei P30 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.47-inch, QHD+
  • SoC: Kirin 980
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256/512GB
  • Cameras: 40, 20, 8MP, and ToF
  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 4,200mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

2. OnePlus 7 Pro

The OnePlus 7 Pro isn’t the first OnePlus phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor, but it packs plenty of other neat tricks. You’ve got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6/8/12GB of RAM, and a 4,000mAh battery. But it’s also packing a class-leading 6.67-inch 90Hz AMOLED display with a 3,120 x 1,440 QHD+ resolution.

OnePlus also delivers a triple rear camera setup, featuring a 48MP main shooter, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a 16MP ultra-wide snapper. Meanwhile, a 16MP pop-up camera handles your selfies.

Like the idea of a OnePlus phone with an in-display sensor but don’t want to spend that much cash? Then the firm also has the vanilla OnePlus 7, ditching the triple rear camera, 90Hz screen, and pop-up design. Think of it as the OnePlus 6T 2019.

OnePlus 7 Pro specs

  • Display: 6.67-inch, QHD+ AMOLED
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8/12GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Rear cameras: 48, 8 and 16MP
  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

3. Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro might not be the latest Huawei flagship, but it should be cheaper now that the P30 series is out. And you’re still getting plenty of cutting-edge features here.

Huawei’s late 2018 flagship packs a Kirin 980 chipset, 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB of 256GB of storage, and a notched 6.39-inch OLED screen (3,120 x 1,440) with an in-display fingerprint sensor. You’re also getting 3D face unlock, a 4,200mAh battery with 40 watt fast charging, 15 watt wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

You’re looking at a 40MP main camera, 8MP 3x telephoto sensor, and 20MP ultra-wide snapper. Don’t expect low-light capabilities on par with the P30 Pro, but it’s still a great performer at night.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch, QHD+
  • SoC: Kirin 980
  • RAM: 6/8GB

5. Xiaomi Mi 9

Xiaomi Mi 9 back

Like the idea of a flagship phone but don’t want to pay a ton of cash? That’s where the Xiaomi Mi 9 comes in, starting at roughly €500. Noteworthy core specs include a Snapdragon 855, 6GB of RAM in the West, 64GB to 256GB of storage, and a 3,300mAh battery with 27W wired or 18W wireless charging.

Opinion: Why is the Xiaomi Mi 9 so grossly underrated?

The phone packs an in-display fingerprint sensor in the 6.39-inch AMOLED screen (full HD+). Xiaomi allows users to activate app shortcuts by swiping their finger from the fingerprint sensor following authentication, making for a rather neat feature.

You’re also getting a triple rear camera setup here, in the form of a 48MP primary shooter, 16MP ultra-wide snapper, and a 12MP 2x telephoto camera. Toss in a 20MP camera in a waterdrop notch, and it’s tough to argue that you don’t have a capable setup on paper.

Xiaomi Mi 9 specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch AMOLED, FHD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8/12GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB
  • Rear cameras: 48, 12, and 16MP
  • Front cameras: 20MP
  • Battery: 3,300mAh
  • Software: Android 9.0 Pie

6. Xiaomi Mi 9T

Xiaomi launched the Redmi K20 series in China and the standard model is available in Europe as the Xiaomi Mi 9T. For roughly $350, you’re getting a Snapdragon 730 processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of (fixed) storage, and a 4,000mAh battery.

The Mi 9T delivers a 6.39-inch full HD+ full-screen AMOLED screen, complete with an in-display fingerprint sensor for your convenience. You won’t find a notch or punch-hole cutout here though, as Xiaomi’s phone offers a 20MP pop-up selfie camera housing.

Other noteworthy features include a flexible triple rear camera setup (48MP main, 13MP ultra-wide, 8MP 2x telephoto), 3.5mm port, NFC, and USB-C. All in all, you’re essentially trading power and camera resolution for battery life and a slick design compared to the Mi 9.

Xiaomi Mi 9T specs:

  • Display: 6.39-inch AMOLED, FHD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 730
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 64/128/256GB (fixed)

The Realme X isn’t the most powerful phone on the list, but it’s one of the cheapest devices with an in-display fingerprint sensor. And you’re getting quite a few features for roughly $250 anyway.

The top-end Realme device offers a 6.53-inch full-screen AMOLED display (full HD+), Snapdragon 710 processor, 4GB to 8GB of RAM, 64GB to 128GB of fixed storage, and a 3,765mAh battery with 20 watt charging.

8. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom front and rear

Oppo hit the ball out of the park with its Reno 10x Zoom Edition smartphone, being one of only two manufacturers to release a device with a periscope zoom camera.

Oppo’s flagship delivers a 13MP 5x zoom periscope camera, using a combination of the camera and software to deliver 10x hybrid zoom. Don’t care for zoom capabilities? Well, you’ve also got a 48MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide sensor.

The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition uses a “shark fin” pop-up housing for the 16MP front-facing snapper, making for one of the most distinctive designs of 2019. This enables a full-screen design for the 6.6-inch AMOLED screen (full HD+), which hides an in-display fingerprint sensor too.

The Reno 10x Zoom Edition also delivers a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB to 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, and a 4,065mAh battery with 20 watt charging. Its 799 euro (~$891) pricing makes it a little cheaper than the P30 Pro, so those looking for great zoom should consider this option.

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom Edition specs:

  • Display: 6.6-inch AMOLED, FHD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 855
  • RAM: 6/8GB
  • Storage: 128/256GB
  • Rear cameras: 48, 13, 8MP
