Pop up camera phones and slider phones are awesome for a number of reasons. They allow for higher screen-to-body ratios, as there’s no need for a notch or a thick bezel to house the selfie camera. They also have a futuristic vibe and give users concerned with privacy peace of mind, as the front-facing camera isn’t staring at them the whole time.
The first smartphone with a pop up camera was the Vivo Nex, which launched in 2018. Since then, many other pop up phones have hit the market. We’ll show you the best ones in this post, but before we jump in, please note that this article is divided into two sections. The first lists the best phones with motorized pop up cameras, while the second shows you the best slider phones — phones with hidden selfie cameras that are revealed when you slide the display down manually.

1. OnePlus 7 Pro
The 7 Pro is OnePlus’ first pop up camera phone. The selfie snapper has a 16MP sensor and can be raised at least 300,000 without an issue, according to the company. That equates to around 165 times per day for five years, so you shouldn’t worry about the mechanism breaking down.
The 7 Pro is the most expensive phone OnePlus has made to date.
The cool thing about the camera is that if you drop the phone while the camera is in use, it will retract back into the phone, keeping it from taking damage on impact. Our very own David Imel tested this out as part of his OnePlus 7 Pro review and said it worked as advertised.
The OnePlus 7 Pro is the most expensive phone the company has ever made, but it still offers a lot for the money. The flagship has top-of-the-line specs and a great design, but it’s missing a few features found on competing phones including wireless charging and an IP rating.

2. Xiaomi Redmi K20/Mi 9T and K20 Pro
The Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro and K20 are similar in many ways. They look more or less the same and both feature a 20MP pop up camera that elevates from the top edge in just 0.8 seconds. There are six pop up sounds available to choose from, which is a nice touch.
The main difference between the two phones is the chipset. The Pro model is powered by the Snapdragon 855, while the standard K20 packs the Snapdragon 730 under the hood. The Pro also offers faster charging. Both devices sport an in-display fingerprint scanner, three rear cameras, and a 4,000mAh battery.
The Redmi 20 Pro has not yet been released in Europe or the U.S., but the Redmi 20 is already on sale in the former by a different name — Xiaomi Mi 9T. You can get it on Amazon via the button below.

3. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom
This phone stands out because of its unique 16MP shark fin style pop up selfie camera. Because of its shape, the pop up module is larger than those of the OnePlus 7 Pro and Redmi K20 and also houses the earpiece as well as a front and rear flash.
The phone sports a rear triple-camera setup a with 5x optical and 10x hybrid zoom. It also features an in-display fingerprint scanner, a large 6.6-inch display, and a 4,065 battery. There’s plenty of power under the hood thanks to the Snapdragon 855 chipset and as much as 8GB of RAM.
However, the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom does not have an IP rating, wireless charging, or a headphone jack. It wasn’t released in the U.S., but it is available in Europe, where it undercuts the competition by a wide margin.

4. Asus Zenfone 6
The ZenFone 6‘s selfie camera is different from the other phones on this list. Instead of popping out from the top edge, it flips from the back to the front. That means the rear cameras, which feature 48 and 13MP sensors, are also used for taking selfies.
In addition to its innovative camera, there are a couple of other things that make the Zenfone 6 special. It runs a near-stock version of Android, packs a massive 5,000mAh battery, and has a headphone jack on board. It even supports expandable storage and sports a gorgeous design.
The phone offers great bang for the buck — check pricing below. However, that means the company had to cut some corners. There’s no IP rating or wireless charging. The phone also comes with an LCD screen instead of an OLED one found on most high-end phones. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the best pop up camera phone you can currently get your hands on.

5. Samsung Galaxy A80
This phone doesn’t have a traditional pop up camera that elevates from the top edge of the phone. Instead, it has what’s best described as a pop up flip camera, as the main camera module at the back slides up and then rotates to the front. It’s basically a different — more complicated — version of the camera found on the Asus Zenfone 6.
The Galaxy A80 is not a flagship, but it still has more than enough power for the average user. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 730 chipset, has 8GB of RAM, and sports a large 6.7-inch display. Unlike Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S and Note series, the A80 does not feature a headphone jack or support expandable storage.
For now, the handset is available in select markets including a few European ones like the U.K. and Italy. It was not released in the U.S.

6. Realme X
The 16MP pop up camera elevates from the upper edge of the Realme X in just 0.7 seconds. It’s centrally positioned to allow for more natural-looking selfies and auto-retracts the moment the phone detects a fall.
The Realme X has one of the best cameras in its class.
Like the Galaxy A80, the Realme X is a mid-ranger. It packs the Snapdragon 710 chipset under the hood along with up to 8GB of RAM. There’s a dual-camera setup at the back that’s one of the best in the segment and is capable of capturing great images in low-light conditions. The handset also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner, a headphone jack, and a large 6.53-inch display.
The Realme X is definitely one of the best pop up camera phones on a budget out there, but getting your hands on can be a challenge. The device is already available in a few markets including India, but it has not yet been released in Western markets.

These are the six best phones with motorized pop up cameras in our opinion, although there are a few other great options out there as well. These include last year’s flagships the Oppo Find X and Vivo Nex, and the mid-range Oppo F11 Pro, to name a few.
In case having a motorized pop up camera phone isn’t your thing for whatever reason, there are also a few great slider phones to choose from. The selfie cameras on these phones are hidden from sight when not in use and they pop up on top when you slide down the screen. There’s less of a chance of the mechanism breaking since it’s not motorized, which is a good thing for many, but on the other hand, the phones don’t feel as cool or futuristic. 1. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Mi Mix 3 5G
The Mi Mix 3 sports two front-facing cameras, which are revealed when you slide down the phone’s display. Xiaomi also included sound effects to make sliding the phone up and down a little bit more fun.
In terms of specs, the handset is aimed at demanding users. It’s powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset and comes with as much as 10GB of RAM. Other highlight features include 960fps slow-mo video capture, dual-frequency GPS, and an affordable price tag. All these things combined make the Mi Mix 3 one of the best slider phones you can get.
There’s also a 5G version of the Mi Mix 3 available, which was announced at MWC in February — get it here. It sports the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset and a slightly larger battery (3,800mAh vs, 3,200mAh). Most of the other specs and features are identical to those of the regular Mi Mix 3.

2. Honor Magic 2 and Magic 2 3D
The Honor Magic 2’s slider mechanism works the same as the one of the Mi Mix 3. When you slide down the screen, the three front-facing cameras are revealed up top.
There are two versions of the phone available. You have the regular Honor Magic 2 and the upgraded Magic 2 3D. The phones look the same and share most of the specs including the latest Kirin 980 chipset that also powers the Huawei P30 Pro, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and three rear cameras. The differences between them are that the 3D model also supports 3D facial recognition, has a graphene-based heat pipe for better performance under load, and comes with more storage.
Unfortunately, neither phone was officially released in Western markets. However, you can get the international model on Amazon, but it doesn’t come with a warranty.

The last two slider phones on our list are Lenovo’s Z5 Pro and Z5 Pro GT, which were announced in 2018. They look more or less identical with a few a design changed here and there and feature two front-facing cameras.
The biggest difference between the two is the chipset. The Z5 Pro comes with the Snapdragon 710 under the hood, while the GT model is powered by the Snapdragon 855. The phones share most of the other specs and features, as they both sport two rear cameras, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 6.39-inch display.
