OnePlus 7: All the rumors in one place (Updated May 8)

OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition

OnePlus made a name for itself by creating smartphones with terrific specifications which sell for a fraction of the cost of other major flagships. The upcoming OnePlus 7 should continue that trend, but what will it look like? What are its specs? How much will it cost? When will we see it?

Here’s what we know about the OnePlus 7 so far.

OnePlus 7: Name and release date

Give credit to OnePlus: its naming conventions remain dead simple. Every year since 2016, OnePlus has introduced a numbered phone followed by a “T” variant closer to the end of the year.

While the numbered phones are seen as true sequels, the T variants usually include slight iterations and tweaks to those sequels. Because the most recent OnePlus phone is the OnePlus 6T, you’d think that the next phone is the OnePlus 7. But the company has since confirmed that it’ll be showing off the “OnePlus 7 series,” specifically mentioning the OnePlus 7 Pro name too. So it indeed looks like there’ll be at least two phones on offer: a standard model and a Pro variant.

As for a release date, OnePlus has announced a May 14 launch event in New York, London, and Bangalore. The Chinese launch event will take place on May 16.

OnePlus 7: Specs and features

As with previous OnePlus phones, expect the OnePlus 7 to be a powerhouse of a smartphone. That likely means the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, at least 6GB of RAM, a big battery, a big display, and an improved in-display fingerprint sensor.

We’re also on the lookout for a standard OnePlus 7 and a Pro model, with the latter confirmed by the brand. It’s believed that the standard model will offer two rear cameras, while the Pro device is confirmed to offer three rear cameras. Wired has spent time with the phone too, revealing that it has a 3X zoom rear camera. This isn’t as big a leap as the Huawei P30 Pro and its 5X periscope camera, but it’s certainly an improvement on paper over 2X telephoto shooters.

Frustratingly, there are two features we won’t see on the OnePlus 7 — wireless charging and an IP rating. Talking with CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said wireless charging isn’t as efficient or demanded enough by customers as fast wired charging. And, on the OnePlus official forums, Carl Pei confirmed neither the OnePlus 7 nor the OnePlus 7 Pro will have an IP rating.

Even Apple jumped on the wireless charging bandwagon, but not OnePlus.

Lau has a point when it comes to wireless charging — OnePlus’ Fast Charge standard takes the OnePlus 6T from 0 to 60 percent in 35 minutes. It will take some time until wireless charging reaches those speeds.

Then again, we’re seeing an increasing number of flagships with wireless charging capabilities. Even Apple jumped on the wireless charging bandwagon, starting with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X in 2017.

Carl Pei also has a point about IP ratings and how they will increase the cost of the phone — but fans are still fairly upset about the decision.

A feature we are less certain about is 5G connectivity. According to a OnePlus spokesperson, the company’s 5G phone will kick off a new line of smartphones that will be separate from the OnePlus 7. More specifically, co-founder and CEO Pete Lau told The Verge that the OnePlus 7 Pro will offer 5G connectivity. However, it is unclear as of yet if there will be a Pro version with 5G and an additional version without, or if the only Pro variant you can get will be the 5G model.

A leak from April 17 posits that the OnePlus 7 Pro features a Quad HD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, which was later confirmed. DisplayMate then bestowed an A+ rating on the OnePlus 7 Pro screen. OnePlus says this makes it “one of the best” smartphone screens around, although we’ll likely have to wait until launch to find out if it’s actually number one.

The phone also reportedly features a 4,000mAh battery with support for OnePlus’ 30-watt Warp Charge standard, USB 3.1, and a dual speaker setup. It will also feature UFS 3.0 storage, likely making it the first device to officially hit the market with the ultra-fast storage (the Samsung Galaxy Fold, unfortunately, likely won’t make it to store shelves in time to beat the OnePlus 7 Pro).

OnePlus 7: Design

OnePlus has already confirmed that a Pro model is coming, with leaks and teases suggesting it’ll have a pop-up selfie camera (seen above). The pop-up camera could be OnePlus’ solution toward building a nearly bezel-free display instead of a slider mechanism.

It seems likely that OnePlus will also offer a standard model that has more in common with the OnePlus 6T. In fact, one leak shows what appears to be a OnePlus 7 with a waterdrop notch (seen below).

A second leak of the vanilla OnePlus 7’s design also suggests the device will essentially be a OnePlus 6T with some beefed-up specs:

The OnePlus 7 Pro was also spotted in Olixar’s case renders, which show off a OnePlus phone with a pop-up selfie camera. The case renders also show off three rear cameras and the retention of OnePlus’ signature alert slider on the right.

We’ve also seen other leaks of the OnePlus 7 Pro which show off the supposed color options. So far, we’ve seen three colors leak: Almond, Nebula Blue, and Mirror Gray. Check them out below:

It’s very likely glass is used for the rear panel, with the material also present on the OnePlus 6 and 6T. Even though glass is much nicer to look at than aluminum, the former is not nearly as resistant to drops as the latter is.

We fully expect the OnePlus 7 Pro to feature a triple-lensed rear camera, while the vanilla OnePlus 7 will have a dual-lens setup, similar to the OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus is clearly making the camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro a priority when it comes to marketing the device, as we’ve already seen plenty of photo examples from the phone. We already mentioned how Wired tested out the Pro and its 3x zoom, for one. We also know that a cover story for Harper’s Bazaar was shot using the OnePlus 7 Pro. You can see those images below:

According to Harper’s and OnePlus, those images aren’t doctored in any way.

Rumors point to the main camera sensor on both OnePlus 7 devices to be a 48MP sensor made by Sony.

OnePlus 7: Price

OnePlus is known for devices with flagship specs at much lower price points, so we can expect that philosophy to continue with the OnePlus 7. That said, we’ve seen the base model price tag increase with every iteration. Check it out:

  • OnePlus One — $299
  • OnePlus 2 — $329
  • OnePlus 3 — $399
  • OnePlus 3T — $439
  • OnePlus 5 — $479
  • OnePlus 5T — $499
  • OnePlus 6 — $529
  • OnePlus 6T — $549

Based on these price increases, we can expect the OnePlus 7 to cost at least $569, maybe even more. We can definitely expect the rumored Pro model to offer an even higher price tag. In fact, Android Central and tipster Ishan Agarwal have apparently obtained European pricing details, which can be seen below. They were also able to confirm a 6GB+128GB Pro model, but pricing isn’t known just yet. However, it’s suggested that this variant could launch for 699 euros.

  • OnePlus 7 Pro 8GB+256GB — 749 euros (~$838)
  • OnePlus 7 Pro 12GB+256GB — 819 euros (~$916)

Agarwal also supposedly knows the Indian pricing for the Pro models. Here’s what he says:

  • OnePlus 7 Pro 6GB+128GB — 49,999 rupees (~$717)
  • OnePlus 7 Pro 8GB+256GB — 52,999 rupees (~$760)
  • OnePlus 7 Pro 12GB+256GB — 57,999 rupees (~$831)

Even with a price increase, we’ve seen more and more flagships meeting and surpassing the $1,000 mark. The days of OnePlus being a “bargain” seem to be over, but that doesn’t mean the OnePlus 7 won’t still be a good deal.

These are all the rumors about the OnePlus 7 that we’ve come across so far. We’ll update this page as we hear more.

Meanwhile, let us know your thoughts on the possibilities of the next OnePlus device. Are you still team OnePlus or do you plan to jump ship?
